TEACHING ASSISTANT
STUART G. FERST SCHOOL
 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Be “Highly Qualified” by having obtained Approval for Paraprofessional Employment in Title I Positions (ISBE Form 73-95). Please see State requirements for approval*; six months direct client experience required; special education experience preferred 

DUTIES:

Implement Individual Education Plans (IEP) as required by the Illinois State Board of Education according to current format and regulations

Provide supervision, instruction and implementation of lesson plans to assigned students during activities within the school or in the community in the presence or absence of the classroom teacher.  Coverage during teacher absence / vacancy may be of indefinite duration.  (Compensation for coverage during teacher vacancy outlined in letter of agreement dated 12/02.)  Classroom assignment is at the discretion of the administration of the school .  Supervision of the student body at large is the responsibility of the entire faculty.

Provide input into the selection of appropriate instructional materials for students and maintain a supply of classroom materials

Provide input into the development of daily lesson plans in accordance with current school format; in the absence of a Certified Special Educator, develop daily lesson plans with assistance from an administrator.

Utilize general curriculum provided by school.  Assist in the development of supplemental curricula and teaching materials with input from the faculty and administrative team

Assist in the development and maintenance of the school-wide behavior plan; Implement plan consistently as it applies to students in assigned classroom and student body at large;   Give input into the development of and implement  classroom and individual student behavior plans as appropriate.  This may require use of physical management techniques and/or time out as approved for use by ANIXTER CENTER

Implement treatment plans developed by OT/ PT/ Speech / other ancillary staff

Contribute to the multi-disciplinary team approach by offering input related to academic instruction, behavioral strategies and other student issues

Contribute to student evaluation process by collecting data; summarizing, recording and reporting data; and making recommendations to the team

Assist in the assembly of student portfolios as requested

Determine student needs and make appropriate referrals for service or obtain appropriate services / service referrals through ancillary service staff or school administrators

Participate in IEP / MDC / Interdisciplinary / and other student related meetings as directed.  Meetings may be conducted outside of the school

Involve each student and parent/guardian in the development of student's education plan and goals.  Keep parents/guardians informed of concerns or student progress.  Maintain contact with parents/guardians of assigned students and document all contacts according to school policy and as requested

Collect and compile data regarding behavior, skill development and academic progress following required schedules and utilizing all current school data collection and recording formats

Supervise students who are participating in work trials, volunteer activities, paid work, simulated work experiences, within the school or in the community. Complete all paperwork and documentation of data related to work as directed

Complete all required paperwork in a thorough and timely manner

Assist in development of field trips, special events and community outings.  Assist in transportation to and from these events by riding bus (private or public), helping students on and off the bus and assisting students in and out of their residence. Provide supervision and instruction during these events

Assist students on and off the bus at school

During regular school hours, provide transportation training for students to and from residence or community settings.  This includes developing and implementing training plans and accompanying students on public transportation or shadowing them in own vehicle or on public transportation

Participate in the intake process of prospective students by interacting with those students and giving input to the administrative/faculty team regarding the student

Utilize facilitated communication, sign language, Spanish, augmentative communication or any other means of communication as appropriate

Perform duties required to maintain a safe environment, including but not limited to:

     -adhering to all agency safety regulations as well as those

      specific to each job or community setting

     -assisting in instructing students in safety practices and procedures

     -following agency procedures if students are injured including

      obtaining treatment for the injury and completing required paperwork

     -reporting any potential or actual safety hazards to supervisor

     -reporting any observed or suspected cases of abuse or neglect

Provide crisis intervention, including but not limited to the use of hands-on physical management techniques and/or time out as approved by ANIXTER CENTER, administration of First Aid and/or CPR (if certified), calling paramedics, transporting students to health care facility and remaining with them until medical decision is rendered and transportation home is arranged, notifying supervisor and parents/guardians/residential facilities, and completing related paperwork as required

Provide supervision and instruction during student lunch period and assist in lunch room set-up, clean-up, feeding, feeding training, use of adaptive equipment or adaptive methods of feeding

Provide toileting/diapering assistance for students as required

Be security-conscious and take responsibility for helping to keep the school secure at all times

Ensure that equipment is operable, clean and in good working condition.  This includes performing routine maintenance and cleaning of therapy/classroom equipment/materials;  exercise due care when using school equipment; dispose of school property only with the permission of a school administrator

Provide a model of appropriate dress and behavior for students

Maintain a neat and orderly classroom at all times;  assist in maintaining the entire school property in a neat and orderly manner

Participate actively in in-service training as required, completing all mandatory training within the time limits set by Anixter Center

Be mindful of quality issues as they relate to the position and program; participate in activities to improve quality as needed

Submit report showing evidence and freedom from TB / communicable disease in accordance with agency policy and ISBE /CPS mandates
