Program Description
Addiction Recovery of the Deaf is the first and only treatment program in Illinois designed exclusively to meet the needs of adults who are deaf or hard of hearing and chemically dependent on drugs and/or alcohol. Established in 1991, ARD is a unique, award-winning program that provides appropriate service levels based on the severity of an individual’s dependence.

Staff members are competent in deaf culture, fluent in American Sign Language and are also knowledgeable and experienced in the field of substance abuse treatment and rehabilitation. Many, themselves, are deaf or hard of hearing.

Using a multidisciplinary team approach to promote positive outcomes, ARD staff and program participants work together to develop comprehensive and individualized treatment goals. All materials are adapted for people whose primary mode of communication is American Sign Language.

Addiction Recovery of the Deaf Program (ARD) is Growing!

Addiction of the Deaf (ARD), a program operated by Anixter Center is expanding its outpatient services and service areas. As of May 31, 2006, ARD will no longer offer inpatient /residential services. ARD staff is well-prepared as ever to continue assisting individuals who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing with their substance abuse treatment needs. ARD offers and will continue to provide a variety of quality outpatient services, including but not limited to:

  • Substance Abuse Assessments
  • Group and individual counseling
  • Referrals to a variety of services
  • Hosting on-site AA meetings

Service levels range from the most intensive treatment to the least.

Program Eligibility

All applicants must:
  • Be 18 years of age or older;
  • Be Deaf or hard of hearing and use sign language as a primary mode of communication;
  • Receive a primary diagnosis of chemical dependency through the program’s assessment process; and
  • Voluntarily agree to participate in treatment.

Women will receive first priority.

ARD is licensed by the Illinois Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse. It is a member of the Illinois Association of Rehabilitation Facilities and the Illinois Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Association. The program is also accredited by CARF, The Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission. Anixter Center is a nonprofit charitable organization.
