Board Member Profile - Joanna Horsnail

Joanna HorsnailAnixter Center's dedicated Board Chair, Joanna Horsnail, is a partner in the law firm of Mayer Brown LLP. Joanna has two sons, Owen who is 12 and William who is 10. William was born with cerebral palsy.

When he was one year old William’s early intervention therapists suggested to Joanna that she look into taking him to Lekotek. They started going to Lekotek and were thrilled with the experience. Joanna felt the support of a group of people who understood all that she was going through. William loved the toys and the family playtime. Owen loved the sessions as well because he learned how to play with his brother. Owen was even able to help pick out the exciting new toys each month from Lekotek’s toy lending library.

Joanna was asked to participate in a fundraising video for Anixter Center and share the story of her experience with Lekotek. Through making the video and attending a fundraising event, Joanna learned that there was so much more to Anixter Center than just the Lekotek program.

“I was just amazed by the array of services available to adults and children with disabilities,” says Joanna.

She was so amazed that she immediately got more involved by volunteering her time and talents. First, she joined the Resource Development Committee of the Board to assist in fundraising for the broader Anixter Center organization. In 2010, she became an Anixter Center Board member, and in 2014 she became the Board Chair. Joanna feels a renewed energy for the mission every time she spends time around Anixter Center staff and clients.

“I am so impressed with the hard work and dedication that I see every time I visit an Anixter Center program – both with respect to the clients and the staff. And our Board of Directors also impresses me so much. They’re such a talented, selfless and dedicated group of people,” she says.

Joanna says her proudest accomplishment as Board Chair is hiring the new CEO. She found it to be a daunting and extremely important task to lead the search committee for a new CEO, but she was thrilled to have been part of the process to select Dr. Teresa Garate. Joanna looks forward to working with Tere and the entire Anixter Center staff in the future as they continue to innovate to serve the needs of their clients. She notes that Lekotek and Anixter Center have had a huge impact on her life, and the lives of her kids.
