President's Corner - June 2016

Teresa GarateDear Anixter Center Friends, Colleagues, Supporters:

I am happy to announce that I have completed my first year as Anixter Center's President and CEO and continue to marvel at the wondrous impact we have every day in the lives of so many people. I would like to use this issue of our newsletter to tell you a little bit about what we have been doing to ensure that Anixter Center continues to grow and soar all throughout Chicagoland and beyond.

In this first year, in spite of our state budget challenges, we have had many accomplishments and here are a few to share:

We have created operational efficiencies by embarking on an agency-wide review of positions and their alignment to the future of social services as a business and not just a charity; we have implemented a new electronic time keeping system; we have brought in over 500 new donors to the agency; we have increased the agency's visibility through aggressive public media and publications as well as 700 new volunteers; we have recruited new members to our board of directors who you will meet in this newsletter and have had three very successful fundraising and awareness raising events; we have applied for numerous foundation, federal and state grants for new initiatives aligned with our plans for quality, innovation and growth.

Through this year of transition, we have also reinvigorated our team by recruiting impressive leaders from the disability and business community. Kathryn Lavin, LCSW, has joined our team as the Executive Director of the National Lekotek Center, one of our fastest growing Divisions. Joe Chiapetta, a leader in the business community throughout Chicagoland, is now our Employment Services Director and making a huge impact in the short time he has been here. Look for updates from these two segments of our organization in the fall issue.

Probably the most exciting news to share is that we have embarked on the process of identifying a well-known and established real estate partner to facilitate the sale of our location at 2001 N. Clybourn. This is an exciting time for the area of Lincoln Park that our two main buildings are located in, and we have decided to take this opportunity to explore how we can increase our footprint by completing a relocation of all programs and services into areas that are more suitable to our program needs now and in the future. We will soon be able to announce who our selected real estate partner will be in what we expect to be a year-long process that will support our financial stability and improve our visibility.

As you begin another great Chicago summer, don't forget to participate in Chicago Hearing Society's 100th Anniversary Celebration on August 19th at the Chicago Cultural Center. This Division of Anixter Center is the first to celebrate a century of impacting lives and will bring us into a brighter future as we begin a new fiscal year on July 1st. If I have not yet met you, I invite you to reach out as I am very appreciative of the support all of our stakeholders provide.

Sincerely,

 Tere-Blue

Dr. Teresa Garate
