INTERPRETER REFERRAL SERVICE

  • Qualified sign language interpreters, oral interpreters, relay interpreters, and real time captioning provided for individuals and organizations
  • Acts as link between deaf individuals who use sign language and hearing individuals who do not know sign language
  • Provides seminars and workshops on proper use of interpreters when communicating with deaf individuals
  • Acts as consultant to interpreter trainers, interpreters, and other professionals
  • Fee for service

HEARING AID SALES AND SERVICE

  • Complete hearing testing
  • Provides hearing aid evaluations, consultations, sales, and repairs
  • Latest technology, including programmable and digital hearing aids
  • Musician and custom ear protection
  • Staff conversant in American Sign Language and in Spanish
  • MasterCard and Visa accepted

HEARING AID BANK

  • Hearing aids are issued to qualified people who cannot afford to purchase a new aid
  • Complete hearing testing
  • Accepts donations of new or used hearing aids
  • Staff fluent in American Sign Language and in Spanish
  • Accepts public aid with a sliding fee scale

SILBERMAN CENTER FOR ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY

  • 24-hour online/mail order catalog for devices including signaling systems, add-on amplification devices, amplified telephones, loud telephone ringers, wake-up devices, and more.

TTY AND AMPLIFIED PHONE DEMONSTRATION

  • Serves as a distribution and demonstration site for the Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation
  • TTYs are loaned, free of charge, to qualified individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing or voice-impaired
  • Demonstrations of amplified telephones which are loaned free of charge to qualified individuals
  • Applications are available; appointments are necessary
  • Staff fluent in American Sign Language and Spanish

HEARING LOSS LINK

  • Assists individuals and families to understand and cope with hearing loss
  • Develops and promotes access to communication in the workplace and in public settings
  • Provides links to other organizations that provide social, legal, medical, and psychological services
  • Offers information about acquired hearing loss and assistive technology

SOCIAL SERVICES AND ADVOCACY

  • Qualified staff fluent in American Sign Language
  • Helps individuals identify and secure access to services
  • Works to ensure accessibility for people who are deaf or hard of hearing to public and private services
  • Educates community regarding needs of people who are deaf or hard of hearing
  • Provides income tax assistance for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing

  • Calendar of social and recreational events
  • Listing of educational opportunities
  • Posting of job openings
  • Schedule of workshops, training opportunities, and conferences

YOUTH PROGRAM

  • Promotes independence, communication, and socialization for youth who are deaf or hard of hearing
  • Provides structured, creative activities
  • Creates opportunities to exercise responsibility, leadership, and independent living skills

ADULT ROLE MODELS IN EDUCATION OF THE DEAF (A.R.M.E.D.)

  • Recruits and co-ordinates professionals who are deaf or hard of hearing to share their employment and life experiences with students in Chicago-area elementary, junior high, and high schools

VICTIM ASSISTANCE PROGRAM FOR THE DEAF OR HARD OF HEARING

  • Crisis intervention and advocacy services for people who are deaf and are victims of crime
  • Short-term counseling
  • Assistance with filing a police report and working with the court system

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE COUNSELING

  • Assists deaf and hard of hearing victims of domestic violence and their children to secure shelter from further abuse
  • Provides information, support, counseling, and advocacy to help victims exercise their rights and take advantage of their options
  • Collaborates with other programs in the community to provide services to help victims become self-sufficient
  • Educates the community that abusing a family member is a crime which will not be tolerated

INFORMATION AND REFERRAL

  • Information related to all aspects of deaf or hard of hearing issues
  • Technical assistance regarding the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
