CHICAGO (June 6, 2002) — The late Lester J. Anixter, a Chicago philanthropist and businessman, was memorialized June 4 with a street named in his honor. A sign at the Southeast corner of East Lake Shore Drive and Michigan Avenue denoting “Honorary Lester J. Anixter Way” was unveiled in a ceremony attended by family and friends. Mr. Anixter died February 2.

Ald. Burton Natarus (42nd) introduced a resolution to City Council to initiate the commemoration. Ald. Natarus called Mr. Anixter a “great human being” at the ceremony. The location of the sign is especially appropriate since Mr. Anixter’s wife, Muriel “Midge” Kirchheimer Anixter, lives nearby.

Mr. Anixter was a champion for people with disabilities and played an important role in Anixter Center, a nonprofit agency assisting people with disabilities to live and work successfully in the community. The agency, founded in 1919, was renamed “Lester and Rosalie Anixter Center” in 1993, honoring Mr. Anixter and his first wife for their generous support and service.
