CHICAGO (October 31, 2003) Anixter Center presented the Legislator of the Year Award to State Senator Susan Garrett (D-29) at the human service agency’s 24th Annual Awards Luncheon on October 24 at Hilton Chicago and Towers. Sen. Garrett was honored for her support of Anixter Center and people with disabilities throughout Illinois. As community providers faced a $10 million funding cut this spring, Sen. Garrett took a leadership role in reversing the cut and in the bill that resulted in a Cost of Doing Business increase for services for people with disabilities.

“Senator Garrett’s actions this spring were vital to Anixter Center and its clients,” Anixter Center President and CEO Stuart G. Ferst said. “She always finds time to listen to our concerns and is always searching for solutions.”

Senator Garrett also has been a staunch supporter of the Adult Community Transition Program, a collaboration of Anixter Center , Northern Suburban Special Education District and the Parent Advocacy Group.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to receive this award,” Sen. Garrett said. “My hat goes off to Anixter Center. I can’t tell you how influential and impactful they have been in Springfield.”

The luncheon honored individuals and businesses who have made a positive impact on people with disabilities in the Chicago area. Anixter Center annually serves 4,000 people with disabilities through 70 programs at 35 locations.
