Chicago, IL (June 24, 2005)Art for Peace, an art therapy group established at Anixter Center in the beginning of 2002, was inspired by individuals’ desires to respond to the events of September 11, 2001 and beyond. Anixter Center and its three divisions, CALOR, Chicago Hearing Society and the National Lekotek Center, annually provide services to more than 5,000 adults and children with disabilities through 70 programs at 35 locations. Art therapy is a therapeutic approach that ”relies on engagement in the creative process to address personal and/or group goals, based on the idea that making art can be healing and life-enhancing,” says Angela Burkhardt, art therapist at Anixter Center .

Group members are offered the opportunity, through Art for Peace, to share what they have witnessed, write an intention together and respond to situations that have impacted them through personal art making in a variety of mediums. An intention is a clear and focused decision ,   made by a n individual or group, to direct one’s thoughts and actions. For example, “I will be calm” or “We will listen to each other.” This is based on the idea that when one makes a conscious decision regarding the purpose of his or her actions, it is more likely to be expressed in the world.

Art for Peace is a reflection of individuals’ efforts to make art as a means of personal and social action, as they attempt to bridge the action of creation and the reality of getting along with each other. Participants share their work and experiences with the hope of contributing to peace within themselves, among each other and throughout the world. The group invites others to witness their work and intentions.

Public Opening: July 8 6-8 p.m.

Exhibition runs from July 8-28, Gallery hours M-F, 9 a.m. - noon

Gallery at Holy Covenant United Methodist Church
