CHICAGO (January 18, 2005) – Anixter Center co-sponsored an event that was the first of its kind in Illinois, the 1st Annual Autism Spectrum & Sensory Integration Expo 2005, held Jan. 15 in suburban Elmhurst. “Our specific goal in participating was to bring more students to our schools and to attract more people to Anixter Center’s various programs,” says Susan Gardner, assistant director, Educational and Therapeutic Services. Many of Anixter Center ’s programs for both children and adults provide an array of services for individuals with autism. Staff members distributed a wide variety of literature about various Anixter Center programs. “It was also very positive for our staff to attend; it helps them to see how advanced our program really is,” Gardner says.
The United States is in the midst of an explosion in the number of cases of autism. The Autism Society of America estimates that the number of Americans with autism could rise from its current 1.5 million to 4 million over the next decade. No one is certain about why the disorder – and related disorders – such as Asperger’s Syndrome, are on the rise, but some experts attribute the sharp rise to better diagnostic techniques. Other says a broader definition of these disorders includes more children, while others contend that the numbers indeed reflect a true increase.
